Shortly after I arrived at Drum from Bragg, the entire division was thrust into the largest combat campaign since the Gulf War. Tens of thousands of soldiers from the 10th Mountain deploying together, leaving Watertown at the same time — leaving wives, husbands, and children behind in the same neighborhoods, the same school zones, the same streets.
I deployed three of those first five years. The first two deployments had only six months between them; the second one was a full year. I was a platoon sergeant. I watched the deployment ceremonies — the ones where the families come to say goodbye — get smaller and smaller across that five-year span, because the families were falling apart.
What kept it together was the town. The Family Readiness Groups got tighter than doctrine ever told them to be. Local churches and community groups built support networks that extended far past their congregations. Free counseling came online and stayed online. The other military spouses became the backbone of the whole thing. They were what was left holding it together while the soldiers were gone. That's where the way Watertown treats military families today actually comes from. It wasn't a marketing decision. It's earned ground.
Drum runs at the scale of a small city. Hospital, retail, family support, schools, recreation — most of what a family needs in the first 90 days lives inside the gates.
The primary MTF for Fort Drum families, and an outpatient clinic rather than a hospital. Primary care, behavioral health, pediatrics and pharmacy on post; inpatient, surgical and OB care is referred off post to civilian network hospitals in the Watertown area. TRICARE Prime enrollment routes most active-duty families here by default; off-post Network Providers are an option depending on plan and capacity.
The Fort Drum Commissary and Main Exchange are two of the larger operations in the Army system. Plan a first-week run for groceries, household basics, and uniform items. The Exchange concourse also houses food court, optical, alterations, and concessions.
Fort Drum MWR event and lodging facilities (events & lodging), Family & MWR fitness centers, the bowling alley, the riding stables, post outdoor recreation areas, the post golf course, and Outdoor Recreation gear rental. Strong programming for families during deployments.
Where new arrivals enroll for newcomer orientation, EFMP, financial readiness, employment readiness for spouses, deployment support, and the Family Readiness Group network. ACS is the single most useful first stop for a spouse new to Drum.
On-post child development centers, school-age programs, youth sports, teen center, and the Family Child Care home-provider program. Waitlists vary; enroll the moment orders drop — don't wait until you arrive.
Multiple on-post chapels with active congregations and chaplain support. Strong involvement in family ministry and deployment family support — a thread of the town's "rally" tradition that traces back to the early 2000s deployment years.
Every installation has a story it tells about itself. Drum's is operational, not ceremonial: this is home to the 10th Mountain Division, the most-deployed division in the Army since 9/11. Daily life is shaped by that.
Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield run rotary-wing operations at a tempo nowhere else in the Army matches. The 10th Mountain Combat Aviation Brigade — the "Falcon Brigade" — operates UH-60 Black Hawks, CH-47 Chinooks, and AH-64 Apaches across a light infantry doctrine the rest of the force studies and the rest of the force can't replicate at scale.
Layered onto that are the division's own formations: the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Brigade Combat Teams — Warrior, Commando and Patriot — alongside the Combat Aviation Brigade (Falcon), Division Artillery (Mountain Thunder) and the Sustainment Brigade (Muleskinner). The result is an operational density that's unusual: incoming families regularly meet families from three or four very different communities (conventional light infantry, Green Beret, SOAR) living in the same neighborhoods, sharing the same commute, and never quite living the same life.
What this means practically: helicopter noise is constant. Training schedules are heavy. Deployment cycles across the division's brigades don't always line up, which means at any given moment some segment of the community is gone. If you've been at a non-deploying installation before, expect a noticeable step up in operational tempo.
Some installations run their own federal school system. Fort Drum does not — every child living on post attends a New York public school. Adirondack Creek, Crescent Woods and Monument Ridge feed Indian River Central School District; other on-post areas fall under Carthage Central. Busing is provided free of charge for every student attending school on Fort Drum. Confirm your specific address with the Fort Drum School Liaison Office before you accept quarters.
Because assignment follows your housing area rather than one post-wide system, two families living on the same installation can end up in different districts — different calendars, different registration, different transfer rules. Worth a conversation with the School Liaison Office before you sign for housing.
Indian River and Carthage each coordinate IEP and 504 services through their own special services offices, without the cross-installation portability a federal system would provide. If you have an active IEP or 504, contact the receiving district and the School Liaison Office before you finalize a housing decision.
Fort Drum MHA, 2026 rates, with dependents. Drum sits in the middle of the BAH range nationally, but Watertown's housing market is genuinely affordable — the BAH-to-PITI ratio at Drum is one of the strongest in the Army for first-time buyers.

PITI coverage assumes a 30-year VA loan, 0% down, current rates around 6.5%, $260k purchase price, and standard Jefferson County (NY) or Lewis County (NY) taxes and insurance — your numbers will vary, especially across the state line.
Fort Drum is one of a handful of installations where the MHA crosses two states. BAH itself is the same regardless of which state you live in — but everything else changes: state income tax (New York has none; New York does), vehicle registration, driver's licensing, property tax structures, and the school district. Buying in Watertown NY versus Watertown NY is a meaningful financial difference, and both are inside the BAH zone. Run the numbers on both before you decide.
Drum is a single-service Army installation. No joint-base branch routing to navigate. The flow below is the standard sequence — your gaining unit's S-1 will adapt the specifics.
The Soldier Support Center on Fort Drum handles initial reception. Records review, finance, ID cards, dependent enrollment in DEERS. Plan one to two days.
Choose on-post (Drum Crossing, managed by Lendlease) or off-post. On-post: apply through the housing office. Off-post: full BAH flows to you. The Housing Services Office (HSO) is mandatory before signing any off-post lease.
Guthrie TRICARE enrollment, DEERS verification, EFMP enrollment if applicable, ACS new-arrival brief, school district registration (Indian River or Carthage CSD on post, depending on housing area; your local district off post).
Sign in with your gaining unit's S-1 — 10th Mountain, 10th CAB, or garrison support. Unit will sequence the remaining tasks: weapons qual, MOS reclass if needed, FRG enrollment, and integration into the operational schedule.
The Housing Services Office is required to review any off-post lease before you sign — and they exist because the rental-scam pattern around military towns is real and well-documented. Listings priced "too good," deposits requested before showing, photos copied from legitimate Zillow listings and reposted on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Drum families have lost real money to this. The HSO catches most of it. Use them.
